    A Block Development Officer (BDO) in Gaya was caught red-handed in an sting operation on February 9, 2026. The Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) arrested Rakesh Kumar, the BDO of Gaya Town Block while accepting a bribe of 50,000 Rupees.

    The operation has definitely shaken local administration. It brought out the message that efforts to clean up corruption in government departments are still going on, as some of the officials who were caught red-handed are the ones in charge to set examples.

    Demanded bribe of 1 lakh rupees for Construction of Government School Wall

    The arrest was made after Suchita Ranjani, the Block Head (Pramukh) of the same block lodged a formal complaint. According to her complaint Rakesh Kumar had asked for a bribe of 1 lakh rupees in total to approve the file to the construction of a boundary wall for a government school under the 15th Finance Commission scheme.

    Additionally, there were other reports stating that the demand was just a part of the bribe of 3.5 lakh, which was necessary for the release of payments to the labor work done. Ranjani said that the officer’s conduct had been questionable for a long time and that he often asked for money to move files or check local schemes.

    Caught Red-Handed by Vigilance team

    After receiving the complaint, The vigilance bureau formed a special team and send to gaya from Patna under the leadership of Deputy SP Satyendra Rai laid a strategic trap.

    On Monday evening, The BDO arrived at the Pramukh’s chamber to collect the first installment of the bribe at the Town Block office. Immediately after he took the 50,000 rupees in cash, the vigilance officers who had been waiting just outside moved in and Caught him red-handed on the spot and the money was seized from the officer.

    After the arrest, the vigilance team also conducted exhaustive searches of Rakesh Kumar’s office and house to find more illegal property or documents. The officer was first locked up and later taken to Patna for questioning. It is likely that he will be presented before a special vigilance court for further judicial proceedings.
