Four young men died as their car sped out of control and fell into a deep canal in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh late Wednesday night. The tragedy occurred as the group was on their way to a wedding in Deeg, Rajasthan from Mahavan Area.
About the Fatal Accident
The mishap is reported to have happened near the Nahla Deviya Bridge on the Govardhan Bypass, under the Magorra Police Station Area. Police reports suggest that the four young men were coming from Mahmoodpur in the Mahavan area.
When the vehicle was nearing a sharp curve on the road, the driver is said to have lost control at high speed and failed to negotiate the turn. The car initially hit a cemented tank on the roadside, then overturned and fell into a canal about 6 meters (20 feet) deep. The collision was so brutal that the vehicle is said to have turned upside down again after hitting the water, trapping the occupants inside.
Profiles of the Deceased
The victims, who were all at the beginning of their twenties, have been identified as people living in the Baldevgarh area under the jurisdiction of the Mahavan police station. It was learnt that three of the deceased were cousins:
- Rahul (23): A professional tailor.
- Amit (23): A law student.
- Mohit (21): A law student.
- Unidentified Friend: A fourth victim, also in his twenties, is a friend of the three whose identity is being formally established by authorities.
The car that was involved in the accident is said to have been the vehicle of Rahul’s brother, Sajjan Singh, who is also a lawyer.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
The locals near the area who heard the crash came running to the scene to help and save the passengers, but since the water was deep in the canal and the car was underwater, they were not able to save the victims in time.
After the alert, the Superintendent of Police (Rural) Suresh Chandra Rawat came the scene with a rescue team and a crane.
“The driver likely failed to negotiate the sharp turn due to high speed. The vehicle was retrieved from the canal with the help of a crane, but unfortunately, all four occupants had already passed away,” SP Rawat stated.
The police have handed the bodies over for autopsy and have already started the post-mortem examination process. An investigation is on to find out if there were any other reasons, e.g. lack of visibility or breakdown, that could have led to the accident. However, the first results reveal that the driver overspeeding around a sharp bend is the cause.
