MUMBAI — In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old taxi driver met with a fatal accident in Wadala when a heavy iron plate weighing nearly 40,000 kg (40 tons) fell from a trailer and crushed his vehicle. Jameer H Siddiqui was driving his car near Khar Ganda Jal area on Sewri, Chembur Road under the Eastern Freeway. He was returning home after a day’s work when the accident took place.

    About the Tragic Incident

On Friday, February 27, 2026, at around 12:55 AM, Siddiqui was driving his Suzuki Ertiga (MH 04 QZ 4010) when a trailer carrying heavy iron plates made a turn. The trailer was moving and the very heavy load of iron plates was not secured well resulted the 40-ton pile shifted and slid off the flatbed, according to the police reports.

The tremendous weight of the metal “pulverized” the vehicle, Siddiqui was left with no option to escape. The impact was so tremendous that the Fire Brigade emergency personnel had to use heavy-duty cranes and Poklane machines to first lift the iron plate and only then they could reach the wreckage.

About the Victim: Jameer H Siddiqui

Siddiqui, a resident of Mohammed Estate in BKC was the only earning member of his family. He has left behind a wife and two little kids who were eagerly waiting for their father to come back from his shift. Being a native of Prayagraj, he had settled his family in Mumbai where he put in long hours at work to provide for them.

The driver of the container truck has been arrested by the Wadala police, and the authorities are investigating the negligence on the part of the transport company.

    A Pattern of Negligence

This horrible event is the latest among the series of infrastructure-related deaths which have been haunting Mumbai in the first half of 2026. The death incident occurred only two weeks after a concrete parapet fell at a Metro construction site in Mulund on February 14, killing one and injuring several others.

The “Nowhere is Safe” refrain is reverberating throughout the city as inhabitants refer to an ever, growing list of recent tragedies:

    • February 10, 2026: A student was killed as a result of his fall from an overcrowded train.
    • December 29, 2025: A BEST bus ran down pedestrians, killing four and injuring others.
    • August 5, 2025: An iron rod which was falling hit a passenger of an auto, rickshaw on the head.

    Calls for Accountability

The public is angry and blaming MMRDA and PWD. People are asking for a safety check of all heavy transport and construction work inside the city. New Metro lines and flyovers are making the city look bigger, but heavy materials transportation without proper safety measures is turning people’s daily commute into a nightmare.

Wadala police have registered an FIR against the person who caused death by negligence in this case by using relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, for the family of Jameer Siddiqui, legal proceedings offer little comfort for a loss that was entirely preventable.
