A massive blast tore through the SBL Energy Limited factory located in Raulgaon Village, Nagpur in the early hours of Sunday 01 March, claiming the lives of at least 18 workers and leaving over 24 others critically injured. The site of the accident, which is a leading player in the manufacturing of mining and industrial explosives, has thus become scene to one of the most tragic industrial disasters in the area.

    Timeline of the Disaster

The explosion took place in the factory’s detonator packing unit somewhere between 7:00 and 7:15 AM. People who saw it happen said the loud noise was such that it could be heard from the neighbouring villages and then a large dark smoke was seen emanating from the place.

In the morning shift, which started at 6:00 AM there were roughly 35 to 43 workers in the packing section area of the Factory.
The blast was of such a magnitude that it burnt the victims’ bodies to an extent where normal identification was impossible, thus the families of the deceased had to depend on DNA testing to identify them.
Most of the dead and injured were female workers who were primarily operating the packing unit when the tragedy happened.

    Emergency Response and Investigation

Immediately following the blast, local residents and police launched rescue efforts. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed to the site to extricate victims from the debris.

    Authority/AgencyRole in Aftermath
NDRF & SDRFAccelerated rescue operations and recovery of bodies.
PESO & DISHExperts from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization and the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health are investigating the cause.
Nagpur Rural PoliceInitiated a technical and scientific probe; considering a case of culpable homicide against the management due to identified safety lapses.

    Government Aid and Condolences

Leaders including the President Droupadi Murmu and PM Narendra Modi expressed deep distress over the loss of lives.

    • Prime Minister’s Office: Declared a grant of ₹2 lakh for the family of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for each injured person from the PMNRF.
    • Maharashtra State Government: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the families of the deceased would get ₹5 lakh each as financial assistance.
    • Company Responsibility: SBL Energy Limited informed that they would pay the whole hospital bill of the injured persons and also provide more financial help to the affected families.

    Safety Concerns

This tragic event has set off debates once again that a thorough check of safety norms in the Nagpur industrial belt is overdue. This belt has nearly a dozen explosives manufacturing units. Former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, who visited the site, said that he had asked for a total safety inspection after the blast at Solar Industries in 2023. Initial police reports indicate that there have been several violations under the Explosives Act and Factories Act.

The injured are currently undergoing intensive treatment at Orange City Hospital and Government Medical College (GMC) in Nagpur, where many remain in critical condition with severe thermal burns and splinter injuries.
