The Indian cricket team has re-established their supremacy on the world stage yet again by narrowly defeating England in a thrilling match at Wankhede Stadium, securing their entry into the ICC Mens T20 World Cup 2026 Final. The game witnessed a record-breaking aggregate score for a T20 World Cup match (499 runs), with India successfully defending a gigantic total of 253/7 and winning by 7 runs.

India’s Batting Masterclass: The Samson Show

India was sent into bat and they took the role of aggressor right from the start. Sanju Samson, who had been waiting for a consistent run in the XI, produced a career-defining innings.

Samson hit 89 off 42 balls with 8 fours and 7 sixes. His score matched Virat Kohli’s 2016 record for the highest score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup knockout. Quick cameos by Ishan Kishan (39 off 18), Shivam Dube (43 off 25), and Hardik Pandya (27 off 12) helped India reach 253/7, which is the highest total in a T20 World Cup knockout match. India’s innings was fueled by a staggering 19 sixes and 18 fours, putting immense pressure on the English bowling unit.

England’s Valiant Chase: The Bethell Scare

Despite the charge of chasing as high as 254, England just didn’t want to give up. It was none other than the great 22-year-old Jacob Bethell who led the resistance with a spectacular century.

Jacob the left-hander kept the England side alive when he hammered 105 off 48 balls, getting his ton in only 45 deliveries. Despite the high scoring, India still managed to get two wickets from the opening session by catching Phil Salt and the captain Harry Brook cheaply. That brought England’s score to 95/4 after 8 overs. Bethell found support in Will Jacks (35 off 20), and the pair threatened to snatch victory with a 77-run partnership in just 39 balls.

The Bumrah Factor: A Masterclass in Execution

When batsmen were racking up the Score, Jasprit Bumrah showed the reason why he is considered the No. 1 in the World.

For the 16th and 18th overs, Captain Suryakumar Yadav gave the ball to Bumrah in order to stop the batsmen scoring freely. Bumrah gave away only 14 runs in his last two overs and also bowled three yorkers in the 18th over that were so well executed that they completely took away the momentum of the English chase.

With England needing 30 off the last 2 overs, Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube combined to defend the lead, restricting England to 246/7.

The Axar Patel Impact: Changing the Game

While the batsmen put on a show, it was Axar Patel‘s agility and athleticism that actually might have won the game for India. His most significant contribution came early in the fifth over when he caught a ball to remove the English captain Harry Brook, starting at mid-off and running backwards while following a high skyer off Jasprit Bumrah, Axar executed a brilliant forward dive to grab the ball just above the ground. And his defining change came in the 15th over when he chased down the ball at deep mid-wicket boundary and timed a well-skilled desperate dive to grab what seemed a sure six and dismiss the very dangerous Sam Curran. Apart from the catch, its not an exaggeration to say that Axar’s fielding on the ground was excellent.
