The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 started with a Bang on February 7 with an exciting opening ceremony and India’s win against USA at Mumbai’s famous Wankhede Stadium.
The ceremony had performances by Badshah, Nora Fatehi and Rishab Rikhiram Sharma.
Rohit Sharma walked to the field holding the Trophy with Jai Shah.

India’s title defense in the ICC Mens T20 World Cup 2026 did not start well. The USA’s captain Monank Patel won the toss and decided to Ball first. The Indian batsmen who bat first did badly. Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck , followed quickly by Ishan Kishan (20), Tilak Varma (25), and Shivam Dube (0).

The Indian team had lost four wickets and only scored 46 runs by the time six overs were finished. Shadley van Schalkwyk, from the USA team bowled well and got three batsmen out in one over. The Indian team was really struggling at this point. The Mid-Innings Crisis was a problem. The pressure got really strong when Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh got out. This left India in a spot at 77 for 6 in the 13th over.

The Captain had to do something to save the game. Suryakumar Yadav was leading the team in his home city. He played a knock of 84 runs off 49 balls and hit 10 fours and 4 sixes.
India get a Total Score of 161 for 9 wickets.

The Indian bowlers did a job of defending this score. Mohammed Siraj got 3 wickets while Arshdeep and Axar Patel claimed 2 wickets each. They got the USA team to 13 runs, for 3 wickets in three overs.
From USA team’s Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamurthi did a job. They made a lot of runs together. They made fifty eight runs. This made the other team a little worried.

India won the match by 29 runs. India’s victory at the Wankhede ensures they sit at the top of Group A with two points. While the result was positive, Captain Suryakumar later admitted that the team “could have batted better,” acknowledging the grit shown by the associate nation in the tournament opener.
