Mumbai Metro Slab Collapse Kills Man, Injures Three
The crash was caused by the 6-foot-by-4-foot concrete slab on the metro bridge to come down. Witnesses said the building nearby shook when the heavy cement slab dropped from a great height, landing directly onto a moving autorickshaw and crushing a private Skoda car.
Rescue teams and the Mumbai Fire Brigade along with the local police were informed and started immediately using heavy machinery and gas cutters, to free the victims from the wreckage of the rickshaw.
Ramdhan Yadav of age 46, the sarpanch of a village and block president of the Samajwadi Party in Jaunpur was the main fatality among the victims. He was confirmed dead at the hospital. It is said that he had just come to Mumbai for a wedding a week ago.
Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav of age 45, the rickshaw driver who is also the relative of Ramdhan, was severely injured and is currently on life support in the ICU.
Mahendra Pratap Yadav of age 52 and Skoda car driver Deepa Ruhiya of age 40 are said to be in stable condition.
A Complete Negligence
The state government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have taken immediate action to respond to what some people refer to as a “grave negligence” case.
MMRDA has imposed a fine of ₹5 crore on the contractor, RAJV Milan Infra, and a ₹1 crore fine on the general consultants. Executive Engineer Satyajeet Salve has been suspended until the completion of the inquiry.
The Mulund Police have arrested five persons including project directors and site supervisors for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared an ex-gratia payment of 5 lakh to the family of the deceased and promised that the state would cover all medical expenses of the injured.
The incident has caused strong public outrage with social media users pointing out that a vigilant citizen had allegedly warned of the safety hazards at the site through a post on social media only a few days before, and the authorities were blamed for ignoring the warnings at that time.
