In a country where millions of families are dependent on the governments Midday Meal Scheme to provide the only nutritious meal that their children might get in a day, a new scandal from Uttar Pradesh has sparked a public outrage. The latest case of “diluted nutrition” is reported from the Mahoba district at Prathmik Vidyalaya Dheekvaha.
A disturbing video has gone viral showing a painful and infuriating scene: school staff diluting 2 half-litre milk packets into large buckets filled with water. It was not an error in cooking but a deliberate dilution of the very nutrients which are supposed to be provided to the school children. Thus the protein and calcium necessary for their growth were completely taken away when this “milk” was given to the students.
The negative impact is even greater as it is said that Principal Monika Soni was in the video when this was going on. After the public outrage, Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Rahul Mishra have come forward ordering a formal investigation and guaranteeing severe punishment to the culprits.
This is not the first instance of the Midday Meal Scheme being abused the program feeds over 110 million children across India. Most people would recall the 2019 debacle in Sonbhadra where an almost identical dilution trick was used to distribute one litre of milk to a dozen of students. The fact that this is happening in 2026 again indicates a profound supervisory failure and a heartless disregard for the most vulnerable members of society.
The real Issue here is not a few buckets of water; it is a total breakdown of trust. When the money allocated for children’s nutrition is diverted or mishandled, the future of the country is the first victim. Suspending a few individuals may be a good gesture, but without a systemic overhaul and a transparent auditing mechanism at the time of delivery, such scandals will keep on haunting our schools. Public officials need to perform their duties with integrity, but in Mahoba, it appears that children were given a lesson in corruption instead of a nutritious meal.
