The Middle East is in the most unstable condition it has experienced in decades due to the initiation of Operation Epic Fury on February 28, 2026. By March 8, 2026 the hostilities between Iran, Israel, and the United States have been transformed into a full-scale regional war, political boundaries have been redrawn, and severe humanitarian and economic problems have been raised.

Operation Epic Fury: The Initial Strike

The US and Israel carried out a huge and well-coordinated preemptive strike on Iran first thing on the morning of February 28, 2026. “Operation Epic Fury” was the name given to the military operation by the U.S. administration, and it delivered nearly 900 airstrikes over the first 12 hours.

The initial wave targeted a high-level leadership meeting in Tehran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Iranian Defense Minister, and the Chief of Staff of the Army. The declared main objectives were the complete destruction of Iran’s nuclear program, production of ballistic missiles, and air defense capabilities.

The Current Military Situation (As of March 8)

The war has unfolded for a week with both sides sustaining and inflicting heavy damages.

The U.S. and Israel have achieved “almost total air domination” over western Iran. Reports indicate that approximately 80% of Iran’s air defense systems have been neutralized.

Although suffering high casualties, the IRGC has launched over 23 successive missile and drone strikes. Main Israeli cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as well as U.S. military assets across the Gulf have been hit.

A U.S. submarine vessel allegedly sunk an Iranian force ship somewhere in the Indian Ocean. Iran has made a move to close down the Strait of Hormuz. This has resulted in occasional attacks on the oil tankers and a drastic fall of the maritime traffic.

For the first time, Oil facilities have become primary targets. The facilities for oil storage in Tehran were the subject of Israeli/U.S. air attacks while Iran fired at the oil refinery of Haifa in Israel.

    Regional Spillover and Countries Affected

The war is no longer confined to the territories of the main warring parties:

    • The Gulf States (UAE, Saudi Arabia Qatar Bahrain): Although these countries have officially stayed neutral, they have suffered from Iranian reprisal attacks. For example, Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest was closed after drone strikes. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have intercepted hundreds of drones, but they have also reported civilian casualties and damage to energy facilities (e. g. a natural gas plant in Qatar).
    • Lebanon: Israel has intensified its airstrikes in southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, which has also been engaged in fighting at the border. More than 500,000 Lebanese have been forced to leave their homes.
    • Syria: The turmoil has led to a remarkable change as rebel forces have come out on top in the government of President Bashar al-Assad, a key ally of Iran.
    • Jordan: Amman has shot down several Iranian missiles over its territory to prevent them from reaching Israel.

    Humanitarian Impact and Global Reactions

The human cost of the 8-day war is staggering:

Iranian state media has reported over 1,300 deaths; however, independent monitoring groups such as ACLED estimate that the death toll is more than 2,400.

A strike hit a girls’ primary school in the southern city of Minab killing approximately 150-170 schoolgirls. President Trump has accused Iran of inaccurate targeting, but Iranian officials and some investigations have blamed U. S. munitions.

Oil prices have increased sharply due to the uncertain situation in the Gulf, and worldwide shipping routes are being diverted through Africa to avoid the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz.

India has largely remained neutral concentrating on the evacuation of more than 52,000 citizens from the region. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will probably be making a statement to Parliament on March 9 about the crisis.
